UPDATED 02.01.09 - Corrections Committee Invited Address Speaker Added to the Conference Program
"Problem-solving research for justice-involved persons with mental illness" (Saturday, March 7th - 4:15pm to 5:15pm - San Antonio Ballroom) Invited Speaker: Henry J. Steadman, Ph.D.
The US correctional population recently reached an all-time high. People with serious mental illness are grossly over-represented in the correctional population, and tend to have particularly poor criminal justice outcomes. Despite the enormity of this problem, APLS features little research on corrections and mental health. Dr. Steadman's work is designed to identify - and help implement - solutions to improve the delivery of appropriate services to justice- involved people with mental illness and to improve criminal justice outcomes. After highlighting this research, Dr. Steadman will lead a discussion with the audience on opportunities for studying this important and exciting topic. Dr. Steadman is internationally known for his research in the areas of interfacing mental health and criminal justice systems and violence among people with mental disorders. He is President of Policy Research Associates, Inc. (PRA), an organization that has conducted research, gathered and disseminated information, and provided technical assistance to improve the delivery of mental health and substance abuse services for people in contact with the justice system for nearly two decades. Dr. Steadman has published 7 books, 120 journal articles, and numerous chapters and reports. He received the Amicus Award from the American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law (1987), the Philippe Pinel Award from the International Academy of Law and Mental Health (1988), the Saleem A. Shah Award from the State Mental Health Forensic Directors (1994), and the Issac Ray Award from the American Psychiatric Association (1999). His B.A. and M.A. in sociology are from Boston College, and his Ph.D. in sociology is from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. Prior to co-founding PRA in 1987, Dr. Steadman ran a nationally known research bureau for 17 years at the New York State Office of Mental Health.
