Napa State Hospital-UC Davis Postdoctoral Fellowship in Forensic Psychology

Napa State Hospital, in partnership with the Division of Psychiatry and the Law at the University of California Davis, is inviting applications for a newly created Postdoctoral Fellowship in Forensic Psychology.

Napa State Hospital is a 1200-bed forensic psychiatric hospital serving individuals with a wide range of psychiatric disorders and penal code commitments, including Incompetent to Stand Trial, Not Guilty By Reason of Insanity, Mentally Disordered Offenders and Mentally Disordered Sexual Offenders.  The hospital is located in the beautiful wine country of Napa, California, which is within easy driving distance to San Francisco, Sacramento, the mountains and the coast.

Postdoctoral fellows will receive a rich and diverse training experience, including weekly seminars, supervised forensic assessment experience, and supervised forensic research experience. The weekly seminars will be held at the University of California, Davis and will include Landmark Case seminar with Charles L. Scott, MD, Professor and Chief, UCD Division of Psychiatry and the Law; Forensic Research and Assessment seminar with Barbara E. McDermott, Ph.D., Professor, UCD Division of Psychiatry and the Law, and Forensic Topics Didactic Seminar taught by various forensic faculty at UCD.  Clinical Supervision will be provided by Forensic Psychologists and Psychiatrists on staff at Napa State Hospital, overseen by Tony Rabin, Ph.D.  Dr. McDermott and Dr. Rabin are the co-training directors of this fellowship.

The fellow will gain experience in conducting a number of forensic assessments, including violence risk assessment (HCR-20, PCL-R, VRAG), sexual violence risk assessment (SORAG, Able Assessment), competency to stand trial (MacCAT-CA, CAI) , and malingering (SIRS, SIMS, M-FAST, TOMM).  Fellows will also participate in consultations with treatment teams on issues such as readiness for release to the community, preparation for court appearances, and incorporating forensic assessment into treatment planning.  There will also be opportunities to participate in research into forensic issues.

Qualifications: Candidates should hold a doctorate degree in clinical psychology and have completed, or be in the process of completing, a pre-doctoral internship.
