Postdoctoral Fellowship in Forensic Psychology

The British Columbia Forensic Psychiatric Service Commission (FPSC) Post-Doctoral Psychology Fellowship Program, with its affiliation with the Mental Health, Law, and Policy Institute (MHLPI) at Simon Fraser University, is a one year full-time placement primarily focused on forensic assessment; opportunities for research and individual and group treatment also exist. The Forensic Psychiatric Hospital (FPH) is a multilevel security facility that provides opportunities for inpatient forensic assessments that range from informing courts regarding treatment issues to matters related to competency to stand trial and mental status at the time of the alleged offence. Two local Regional Clinics (in Vancouver and Surrey) provide further assessment and treatment opportunities; possibility for servicing other FPSC Regional Clinics also exist. The MHLPI provides a unique opportunity for practical clinical training, forensic research and attending law school and graduate-level psychology classes that are pertinent to the forensic mental health area. Fellows are also periodically called upon to assist with training of other mental health professionals and may have the opportunity to observe and provide courtroom testimony. Our goal is to foster the development of a well-rounded competent clinical psychologist, with specialized skills in forensic psychology, who can function independently in various contexts (from outpatient to inpatient) and with a variety of clients (both in terms of demographics and pathology).
