Postdoctoral Fellowship In Juvenile Forensic Psychology and Adolescent Inpatient Treatment

Location

State of Washington, US

Description

The University of Washington and Child Study & Treatment Center invite applications for a one-year, postdoctoral fellowship in juvenile forensic psychology and adolescent inpatient treatment. This program is a training track within the University of Washington Forensic Mental Health Training Consortium.

Training in juvenile forensic psychology includes conducting pre-adjudication evaluations for juvenile courts (including competency to proceed, mental state at the time of the offense, and risk assessments), coordinating the care of and providing psycho-educational services to juveniles adjudicated incompetent to proceed, consulting with attorneys, and, when possible, providing court testimony. Fellows participate in didactic seminars surveying the fields of forensic and developmental psychology.

Training includes inpatient treatment of adolescents with severe emotional, behavioral, and thought disorders. Training is provided in individual, group, and family therapy. Emphasis is placed on community involvement. Therapeutic approaches include behavior and milieu management, psycho-educational skills development, adventure-based recreational therapies, and Dialectical Behavior Therapy. Support is also available to fellows for scholarly research activities and professional education.

Child Study & Treatment Center (CSTC), with 47 inpatient beds, is the only state-operated psychiatric hospital for children in Washington State. It is designed and staffed for the treatment of children from ages 6 through 17 who cannot be served in a less restrictive setting and is the state designated provider of juvenile forensic mental health services. CSTC boasts an attractive, wooded campus and is located minutes from Tacoma, one hour from Seattle, two hours from Portland, Oregon, and three hours from Vancouver, B.C. The scenic Puget Sound and surrounding mountains offer unparalleled recreational opportunities.

A competitive stipend will be offered for the 2009-2010 fellowship year. Presently, the stipend is approximately $37,000 per year. Starting date will be negotiated between 8/15/09 and 9/15/09.
